WHEN IS THE APPLICATION DUE DATE?

Applications for the Summer 2024 will be accepted starting January 1st until March 1st. To receive full consideration, all student application materials, including letters of recommendations, must be submitted no later than March 1, 2024.

IS THERE AN APPLICATION FEE?

No, there is no fee to apply for the REU program.

HOW MUCH IS TUITION?

There is no tuition for you to pay. You will receive a stipend of $6,000. On-campus housing is arranged by the program free of charge. You will also receive reimbursement for travel to and from NYU (up to $600).

CAN CURRENT SENIORS APPLY?

This program is only open to college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Unfortunately, those graduating in the Spring prior to or in the Summer of the REU program are not eligible to apply.

DO I HAVE TO BE A U.S. CITIZEN OR PERMANENT RESIDENT TO APPLY?

Yes. REU participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

DO I NEED TO SEND AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT OR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT?

Unofficial transcripts are accepted.

WHEN DO STUDENTS FIND OUT IF THEY’VE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE REU PROGRAM?

We work on a rolling admissions basis, and expect to notify all applicants no later than April 15 of the year of the program. We would appreciate you letting us know if you have accepted another offer for summer research as soon as you can. Notify us at chembioreu@nyu.edu.

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA? WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS?

Applications are reviewed by the NYU REU program directors, coordinator, and the faculty mentors. Reviews are based mainly on research goals and interests, as well as what a student will bring to the research projects. Candidates are notified as soon as they are selected.

HOW IS A RESEARCH GROUP MATCH DECIDED?

Pairing of an REU student with a research group is based on the student’s personal statement. Communication from the coordinator prior to arrival may also help in matching students with groups.

IS THE STARTING DATE FLEXIBLE?

Only under special circumstances can the arrival and departure dates to and from the program be adjusted. Please contact us at chembioreu@nyu.edu to discuss.

WHERE IS THE SCHOOL CAMPUS LOCATED?

The University is located at Washington Square Park on the island and borough of Manhattan in the neighborhood called Greenwich Village.

CAN I VISIT THE SCHOOL?

Located in the very heart of the Washington Square campus, the Jeffrey S. Gould Welcome Center at New York University hosts on-campus visits along with several on-campus events. However, this tour does not include REU-specific locations.

WHERE WILL I LIVE WHILE AT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY?

On-campus housing is provided for the full ten weeks of the program. NYU REU houses students in dorm-style residences that are conveniently located within walking distance to Chemistry buildings and labs. Accommodations vary in size, and are furnished. Special needs can be accommodated upon notification as well.

WILL I HAVE A ROOMMATE? WILL I LIVE WITH OTHER REU STUDENTS?

Yes. All accommodations are multiple-occupancy. Therefore, you will have at least one roommate. Yes, you will live with other REU students.

CAN I TAKE A SUMMER COURSE OR GET A SUMMER JOB WHILE IN THE REU PROGRAM?
